a second kitchen design

Taking into account comments, good ideas, and original plans I think we have a new contender.
No, before we hadn't thought about where the microwave would go or the trashcan. :)

Originally Sara had us putting the range on the chimney and running counters all around it. We couldn't figure out how in practise that would work and started dreaming about dual ovens and cooktops in counters and all sorts of things that are fancy and pretty, but not really needed for how we live now or plan to live later.    This one gives Harris a gas cook top and me a convection oven. Dual fuel from bosch and we're both happy.

It also creates two separate work stations on either side of the range and will fit around the door that will exist for the next year, but not forever. I like that this way we're not building out something that will have to be torn out in 12 months. I really really hate that.

We also removed the surrounding cabs from the fridge, as those three cabs cost more than everything else in the kitchen and were no longer desired once we settled on range instead of cooktop/oven.  We have a couple of things in the kitchen that we use (a cart and cutlery/tool chest) that we've also planned spaces for.

And here in glorious 2-D. Sink gets counters on either side and looks out a window, range can be vented outside through the chimney (here's hoping), and the fridge sits on the other side of the wall which is totally ok, because we're rocking a fridge we found in the house for at least a little while.

This comes functionally with Harris and I working together. When we build with legos I make patterned cubes, fitting pieces together in blocks. He builds cars, spaceships, ducks, etc. This is meaningful because when we went to pick out the ikea cabs, I couldn't get things to fit into patterns so gave up on the range placement. Harris was like, well, why don't I build a box over there if they don't make one that fits it? I look and see "workspace should be XXX inches" and think, that's what it needs to be while Harris sees it, gets the ruler out and says, yeah, but you can work in that space, it will be cozy.  Very helpful combination for the kitchen.

  2. And when we looked back on the schematics, it's almost exactly what you originally designed. We made it way hard on ourselves but it was totally worth it to do it on paper different ways and see practically and in the space why the original design worked so well.

  3. No biggie, but what are the numbers on the 2D floorplan for?

  4. The small orange numbers are there to denote different cabinet bases for ordering or something.

reflecting, thinking about what's next

Reading through the blog, mainly to look at the ruin that was our house and the wee little babes that were our babies, now walking, running, yelling girls and found this from January 2016 What's left - the girls bathroom, master suite, sunroom, tile patching in 2 bathrooms, butler pantry. Summer kitchen. Landscaping. We've completed the girls bathroom, butler pantry, and landscaping. The sunroom is ALMOST finished. After living in the house with three girls we've changed plans a little bit for the remaining work. We're opting to turn what would have been mine and Harris's bedroom, closet, and bathroom into a bonus room of sorts. We'll also leave the wall there and add the washer/dryer upstairs and some desk space so the girls have a place to work. We also will build a general storage closet up there so clothing doesnt have to go up and down to the attic each season. We've also decided we need a shower upstairs, so the clawfoot that is in bad shape up...

Kitchen design

Our overall budget for the kitchen is ~ 7,500 (including appliances, cabs, and counters). The reason we're scaling back on appliance buying for now, focusing on waiting for crazy deals, etc, is because our plans have outstripped our budget. We will have a beautiful kitchen with the appliances we want, but we're not going to go into crazy debt to get it there. we're getting the cabinents from IKEA and using their handy 3-d kitchen designer, this is what we've come up with so far. No, we're not painting the walls blue, I just couldn't figure out how to get the woodwork pattern to show up without having it blue.  This is what you would see from where the back door with sidelight currently is   We want a side by side fride with water/ice in the door and a bosch dual convection wall oven on the right cabinet.  The gas cooktop will go under that hood, giving us enough counter space on either side of the cook top. And if you entered from the butler's p...

Budget

Dad was asking about the budget and how we're doing so far. Initially we had a total budget of about $350k for the house. As we negotiated the purchase price up and found more information about what the house needed that budget went to a maximum of about $415k. As of today, we anticipate spending around $400k or ~$111/sqft. As a comparison, Oakwood cost us $90/sqft and we sold for $106/sqft and the new owners are doing all kinds of neat stuff we dreamed about doing. So far we're under budget in a couple of areas, within budget but ahead of schedule in some (which can also be read as over budget...) and just going to be way over in a couple of key areas. Our original plan including making a temporary kitchen that we could live with, but would be massively overhauled within a year or two. Instead we decided to do it right the first time and enjoy it the entire time. To this end, our temp budget for cabs, appliances, and counters, was initally $5,600. However, that's g...
