Showing posts with the label porch
We needed house numbers.  I was going to try and cut some out of leftover zinc sheet metal, and I may still, but I need to figure out a way to cut curves with tin snips.  They aren't really... designed for that.  I guess you could  cut curves with them, but it increases the chances of an emergency room visit as far as I can tell.  Great for straight lines, though.  Anyway.  I then moved to scribbling on slate.  Natalie thought it was cute, so I moved on it.  I may eventually mount a piece of slate to the wall, but for now having it hang like this is good enough.  You'd be surprised how easily you can drill into slate using a carbide bit!

70 degrees in December

Took advantage of global warming to clean our yard and porch. Harris cleaned out the summer kitchen. For some reason, we had three bags of charcoal. We don't own a charcoal grill. A bunch of other stuff on the curb, in the trash, in the recycling bin. Madeline and I used the leftover trim paint on the benches that Harris made last year from the bedframes left in the house when we purchased it.   Margot napped. And played. And pinched and screamed at Madeline for not letting her run into the street. Then they shared a granola bar and we're ok again. Madeline and I also scrubbed, sanded, and spray painted the ice cream parlour chairs I bought last year while Harris was in rehab. I don't know what went wrong. we scrubbed and sanded until there was no more rust, then when we started spray painting, the paint started flaking even more. It's very odd. This will get them through the summer and we'll work on them again this spring. ...

front door

Our view has dramatically improved from this ...  Our front door. Harris recently removed the wire screening that covered the larger grey panel.   And then we thought - wait a minute... we have painters here... what if we... Crap. There's a ton of glazing and crap from where they took the original panel out and all that. Better clean all of that out.

If you give a Harris a task

This weekend we decided to take the lattice off the front porch. We're getting ready for the painters and have looked over everything inside so many times it all runs together.  It was also about 85 all weekend so being outside was pleasant! We started by knocking out the lattice. Then Harris unscrewed the 1x6 screen that shielded the north side of the porch.  Pretty good until taking the boards back to the shed for playhouse construction a bungee cord whipped around the dolly and smacked him squarely in the jaw. He counted his teeth after that one. Today, fully rested and full of firework joy he set out to finish up. He pulled a nailing board up and part of the porch came up. Sunday thus became a daylong project of sistering the porch joist, rebuilding a railing, pulling down remaining boards,  and laying some new porch boards. I'm still impressed he managed to do this with only one HD trip and the ...

Weekend

Took the weekend to clean up the yard and porch a little bit. A normal person would still think the porch is a nightmare and...they would be correct. Painters start this month so this weekend's work was really more about making a place we can sit in the evening and taking care of some plants. That said, all of us are zonked. Finally got around to taking the chicken wire off the front window. We'll remove the lattice and structure on the end of the porch soon. And some trim paint colors attached to the blue...
