Sigh - may you live in interesting times

Had the three grandparents/parents visit for labor day. Moms set up the girls' room while Dads set up the random things around the house that needed to be moved, sawed, sanded, etc. Lots of cleaning, cooking, and playing uno was had.  Things were looking up in the house!

Baby was due on September 4th. No baby yet. Lucky too as on September 4th Madeline broke her arm while at the kindergarten open house. We spent the evening and we smas at the Duke ER where we learned she has a radial head fracture (elbow) and will be in a long plaster cast for a few weeks as it heals. We've spent the past four days convincing her that casts are ok, she didn't do anything wrong or bad (where this idea has come from we've yet to figure out), and that she should indeed eat ice cream.

See, Friday night we went out to eat at our favorite local place as we'd basically been on the couch all day and needed food. Madeline got home and threw it all up and then Harris was sick the rest of the night. We all ate the same thing/off each other's plates so who knows why they got sick and I did not, but washing a pathetic girl in a new cast is not fun. All weekend she complained that her stomach was upset, so we basically tried to tempt her with any food at all. Want to nibble bites of chocolate ice cream. Perfect. Want to eat four raspberries? Sounds like a great idea. Want to sleep until noon and then move to the couch to watch movies? Ok, we can do that.

She's at school today and hopefully will be feeling fine when she gets home.

Next stage baby appointments are scheduled for Thursday - if the girl doesn't arrive by then the midwives will try to coax her along. Madeline has follow up appointments with an orthopedist Wednesday morning to make sure her arm is healing and to see if they can find the fracture this time.

a second kitchen design

Taking into account comments, good ideas, and original plans I think we have a new contender. No, before we hadn't thought about where the microwave would go or the trashcan. :) Originally Sara had us putting the range on the chimney and running counters all around it. We couldn't figure out how in practise that would work and started dreaming about dual ovens and cooktops in counters and all sorts of things that are fancy and pretty, but not really needed for how we live now or plan to live later.    This one gives Harris a gas cook top and me a convection oven. Dual fuel from bosch and we're both happy.     It also creates two separate work stations on either side of the range and will fit around the door that will exist for the next year, but not forever. I like that this way we're not building out something that will have to be torn out in 12 months. I really really hate that.   ...

Two fun finds

We knew the house had 'help' from the census records and because the service stair exits into the plainest bedroom upstairs. The was also the tangle of wires right by the kitchen that at one point held the call system. In each room, there is also a protruding wire in the wall that is not a light switch. These are the call buttons, or at least, what is left of them   Also, in the center of the dining room floor that was :sob: there was this lovely gadget.   You use it to call for the next course or for whenever you needed the kitchen help to reappear.   It would have been connected to a button or level under the table. When they pull up the flooring, this will be salvaged. Maybe we'll reinstall it so I can ask Harris to bring me glasses of milk.

Bill's new smile

Before reading this, know I have Bill's full permission to share. Most of my friends know Dollar Bill is my daughters' self-proclaimed godfather. The girls run in delight when they hear him approaching calling their names. For our youngest, he's decided she goes by her middle name, asking for little Hillary. What you might not know is that this summer he's experienced some hardships that require surgery. His remaining upper teeth have suddenly failed, making eating, talking, chewing difficult for him. He also doesn't smile as much anymore. Bill had some dental work done when he joined the Navy in the 80s. They pulled teeth and left him with partials that have now failed. The VA won't fix this for him and he doesn't have dental insurance. While you can't see his teeth, his roots are intact - necessitating surgery before he can get dentures. A reputable local dentist  has examined Bill and come up with a plan of treatment to remove his root...
