paint colors

We had a bunch of chips laying around and then swatched and then watched the light play with each color. Sara at Four over One helped us find the bold vivid colors that would compliment rather than distract from the house.

My default response of 'paint it purple' was heard and then we moved on to what will be beautiful.

Paint color will go up around October 7th is my guess.  I assume the house will be finished around October 16th.

Picking colors was actually one of the hardest parts of the restoration. Our lovely neighbors have a yellow house, the one across the street is pink, and the crack house is green.  As I hope the crack house's days are numbered, I didn't want there to be confusion about which green house was a good place to score whatever whenever.  We still get someone every month or so asking if they can rent a room or trying to just walk into the house looking for someone. No need to encourage it.

Pink (neighbor) green (crack), orange (weird), purple (BARNEY), yellow (neighbors), white (currently) were all out.  Red is much too harsh/hard. It's a great color, but hard to get right and more suited to a smaller house than ours.

See if you look at the house from straight across the street, it's imposing but not overwhelming. However, you can see the house from a block away since we're at the top of the ridge that runs along downtown. If we painted the house something BRIGHT it would be *that* house. We don't want our Bunny Manse to be *THAT* house.

That leaves us with blues. there are three other blue houses on the street which made me not want to paint it blue, but you know, it wasn't going to be khaki or gray and as you see above we were running out of options.

Then we saw this house on one of our trips to/from Greensboro- it's blue, saturated, and beautiful without being overwhelming.

One day next spring we'll have a little grassy bed and a pretty swept walkway and a little wrought iron fence. It will be wonderful.

a second kitchen design

Taking into account comments, good ideas, and original plans I think we have a new contender. No, before we hadn't thought about where the microwave would go or the trashcan. :) Originally Sara had us putting the range on the chimney and running counters all around it. We couldn't figure out how in practise that would work and started dreaming about dual ovens and cooktops in counters and all sorts of things that are fancy and pretty, but not really needed for how we live now or plan to live later.    This one gives Harris a gas cook top and me a convection oven. Dual fuel from bosch and we're both happy.     It also creates two separate work stations on either side of the range and will fit around the door that will exist for the next year, but not forever. I like that this way we're not building out something that will have to be torn out in 12 months. I really really hate that.   ...

Bill's new smile

Before reading this, know I have Bill's full permission to share. Most of my friends know Dollar Bill is my daughters' self-proclaimed godfather. The girls run in delight when they hear him approaching calling their names. For our youngest, he's decided she goes by her middle name, asking for little Hillary. What you might not know is that this summer he's experienced some hardships that require surgery. His remaining upper teeth have suddenly failed, making eating, talking, chewing difficult for him. He also doesn't smile as much anymore. Bill had some dental work done when he joined the Navy in the 80s. They pulled teeth and left him with partials that have now failed. The VA won't fix this for him and he doesn't have dental insurance. While you can't see his teeth, his roots are intact - necessitating surgery before he can get dentures. A reputable local dentist  has examined Bill and come up with a plan of treatment to remove his root...

reflecting, thinking about what's next

Reading through the blog, mainly to look at the ruin that was our house and the wee little babes that were our babies, now walking, running, yelling girls and found this from January 2016 What's left - the girls bathroom, master suite, sunroom, tile patching in 2 bathrooms, butler pantry. Summer kitchen. Landscaping. We've completed the girls bathroom, butler pantry, and landscaping. The sunroom is ALMOST finished. After living in the house with three girls we've changed plans a little bit for the remaining work. We're opting to turn what would have been mine and Harris's bedroom, closet, and bathroom into a bonus room of sorts. We'll also leave the wall there and add the washer/dryer upstairs and some desk space so the girls have a place to work. We also will build a general storage closet up there so clothing doesnt have to go up and down to the attic each season. We've also decided we need a shower upstairs, so the clawfoot that is in bad shape up...
